Gladys Franco Obituary

In Loving Memory of Our Beloved Mami

Gladys Franco

April 27, 1945 - September 22, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Mami, Gladys Franco in the early morning hours of Monday, September 22, 2025, following a courageous 10-year battle with Dementia.

Mami was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose presence radiated love, warmth, and kindness. Her vibrant spirit, generous heart and gentle nature left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

She took immense pride in her grandchildren, playing an active role in their upbringing and celebrating every milestone and achievement. Her passion for interior décor was evident in her hands-on approach; whether painting, handling electrical work, or just decorating, she truly did it all. Christmas was her favorite time of year, a season she cherished for its celebration of Jesus, family and joy.

Born on April 27, 1945, in the barrio of Mameyes in Ponce, Puerto Rico, she was the cherished daughter of Julio and Angela Gonzalez and one of the eleven (11) siblings: Sofia, Julia, Angelica, Anna, Josephine, Gloria, Gumecindo, Erasmo, Jacob, and William. As her father’s little girl, she grew up surrounded by love, dreaming of one day raising a family of her own. She met Julio Ortiz through her eldest brother, Gumecindo, and instantly knew he was the one with whom she would build a life. After relocating to the United States, they married and had two daughters—Carmen, named after her paternal grandmother, and Gladys, named in her honor. They settled in Hoboken, NJ, where they opened a record store and worked tirelessly. Though they later divorced, they remained committed to providing a healthy environment for their daughters.

Years later, Mami found love again with Rogelio “Tato” Franco, whom she married in January 1982. Their marriage lasted 31 years, during which they built a strong and solid relationship. Tato was a devoted husband and a beloved grandfather to Jiovany, Bianca and Erica. Known for his passion for cars, and his culinary talents, he lovingly prepared meals each day, ensuring dinner was ready by 3PM when the grandchildren returned from school. His care and devotion to the family were unwavering. His passing in September 2013 was a profound loss that deeply affected Mami and all who loved him.

Despite her battle with Dementia, Mami experienced moments of joy and clarity. In 2019, she welcomed her first great-grandchild, Stella. Though her memory was fading, she was able to recognize Stella, and their brief connection brought her immense happiness. In 2020, her second great-grandchild, Xander, was born. Sadly, due to the progression of her illness, she was unable to fully engage with him. Yet, the presence of her great-grandchildren added light to her final years and continued the legacy of love she so deeply cherished.

Before dementia, Mami was known for her loving, thoughtful, and compassionate nature. She had a deep appreciation for beauty of humanity, a strong devotion to family and friends, and a grateful heart. Her legacy of love and resilience will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Her memory will live on in our hearts always and forever.

Her family will receive relatives and friends for visitation at the funeral home Wednesday, September 24, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

A Roman Catholic Funeral Mass will be offered at Saint Joseph of the Palisades Church in West New York, New Jersey onThursday, September 25, 2025 at 9:30 AM followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, New Jersey.
